Father of Good Gifts

“Whatever is good and perfect comes down to us from God our Father, who created all the lights in the heavens. He never changes or casts a shifting shadow.” James 1:17 NLT   This tells us that God is the giver of everything that is good. The fact that you are alive, that you can take a breath of oxygen into your lungs, is a gift from God. If we just think about it, just the fact that we exist at all, is evidence of God’s goodness. We have much to thank God for!
But then James 1:18 tells us, “He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we might be a kind of first-fruits of all he created.” NIV  This is telling us about the “new birth”

Thanksgiving Today

Thanksgiving, like Christmas in America cannot be ignored. Images of families gathering around tables overflowing with food fill our memories. I understand that not everyone has that memory. All families are imperfect. Many families are broken. The family in America has taken a major hit because we have largely forgotten God and turned away from His Word.
The good news is the Biblical model or blueprint for the family still exists. The origin of the American Thanksgiving holiday is rooted in thanking God. A group of English Christians had traveled to America seeking religious freedom. Landing in the dead of a New England winter they lost almost half of their number to sickness that first winter in America. The next summer with the help of friendly Indians they were able to reap a bountiful harvest. The grateful Pilgrims declared a three day feast to thank God and celebrate with their Indian friends.
So I’ve said all that to say that Willetta and I are thankful for the opportunity to serve the Lord Jesus and the people of this church for the last 20 plus years.

Being Thankful

Recently I heard the story about a soldier whose unit came under intense enemy fire. Many were wounded and killed and one particular soldier, even though wounded took additional hits in order to get to the radio and call in artillery fire on the enemy.

After calling in their coordinates he thanked the person he was talking to just before dying of his wounds. He used his last words to say thank you! What amazing character!
That story reminds me of a story about another man who was wounded in order to rescue others, Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, Isaiah 53:5.

As Christians we should always be thankful that we are no longer slaves to sin. Every day we should live with an awareness that we have been pardoned from the death penalty. ( Romans 6:23 “the wages of sin is death”) Every day we need to start our day with a prayer of thanksgiving, thanking God that can have His presence and power working in our lives. Thanking God that we can be forgiven, that we don’t have to live our lives under the guilt and condemnation of past sins, Romans 8:1. Thanking God that He has given us the “gift of the Holy Spirit” to live within us, guiding us, encouraging us, empowering us in this messed up world.
